    Elizabeth Conley gave up a career in pharmacy with great pay and great health benefits for her and her son. However, in exchange of counting pills, Conley is pressing the shutter button of her cameras. Her life as a newspaper photojournalist has given her a front row seat for the lives of the people in her community.

    Trish Dillon of Katy, Texas comforts her son, Matthew Manuel, 19, while they sit in front of her son and his brother’s gravesite at the Houston National Cemetery on Monday, May 27, 2019. Brett Manuel was an Army Ranger and died at the age of 22, when Matthew was 12, in an accident on base before his third tour of duty. “He was so happy with his life, and as a mom, that’s what you want for your kids,” said Dillon. Manuel was also an organ donor and the family has received letters and have even met some of the recipients of his organs. “It’s like he still lives, helping others and that gives me some peace,” said Dillon.

    Freelance Photographer Sean Rayford decided he wanted to cover the Caravan heading for the Mexico/US border. Without a major media outlet to fund his trip from South Carolina to Tijuana, Rayford turned to crowd funding to pay for his photo story of people trying to cross the border.

    She has photographed people who survived wars but now National Geographic Photographer and film maker Ami Vitale uses her photography to shed light to issues impacting wild life. Vitale has captured pandas working their way off the endangered species list and the last of the northern white rhino.

    After 10 days in the pediatric intensive care unit fighting a severe bacterial infection, Rowan and his mother, Carrie, celebrate New Year's Eve at Methodist Children's Hospital. Carrie made confetti out of construction paper and they made a list of resolutions.

Bullied and ostracized as a child, he turned to food for comfort early. Hector lives in San Antonio, Texas, a city that has a place on Òfattest cityÓ lists every year. Recent figures from Gallup show the city has the second-highest obesity rate among major U.S. cities. 31 percent of San Antonians are obese and 65.7 percent of adults in the county are overweight or obese. Despite San AntonioÕs efforts to curb obesity, an untold number of people with severe obesity live in isolation like Garcia, unable to find or access the medical and psychological help they need to combat its pervasive effects. After years of repeatedly gaining and losing hundreds of pounds, Garcia, who at one point weighed 636 pounds, once again was stuck in the back bedroom of his parents' modest house. In 2010, Garcia renewed his effort to lose weight. With only diet and exercise, he lost over 300 pounds, in hopes of receiving double knee replacement surgery he thought would change his life dramatically for the better. Two surgeries turned into four and Garcia was unable to exercise. He grew depressed and once again turned to food as comfort. Over the next year, Garcia regained the weight he had fought so hard to lose, continuing the cycle of obesity. CAPTION: At almost 600 pounds, Hector Garcia Jr. finds simple daily tasks like bathing a challenge. He struggled to walk across the hall from his bedroom to the bathroom so that his mother, Elena, could wash him after cutting his hair in November 2010. A month before, Hector started dieting after he realized he was close to his highest known weight, 636 pounds.
    Hector Garcia Jr. is skeptical of the sugar-free cake his mother bought for him as he celebrates his 45th birthday with his niece, Lauren Ibarra, in November 2010. "Food didn't mistreat me. Food never said anything bad to me, so I took comfort in eating. And I was making the problem worse," Hector now realizes.

    As he begins to drift off, Hector Garcia Jr. is prepared for anesthesia and his first knee replacement surgery at Mission Trail Baptist Hospital in July 2012. After years of carrying hundreds of extra pounds, Garcia could barely walk on his damaged knees. He'd lost more than 300 pounds on his own through dieting and exercise so he could have both knees fixed.
